THE OTHER SPENCER SISTER- HENRIETTA PONSONBY, COUNTESS OF BESSBOROUGH

Monday 11 September 2023

11:30am-12:30pm

In 2008, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire was brought to forefront of public consciousness with the release of The Duchess, starring Keira Knightly in the title role. Dramatising the life of the Duchess of Devonshire, the film explored her relationships with her husband, her friend Lady Elizabeth Foster, and ultimately her affair with Charles Grey. However, one central figure was missing from this narrative: Georgiana’s younger sister Henrietta.

During this hour long talk in the Blue Drawing Room of Stansted House, you will learn more about the life of Henrietta Ponsonby, Countess of Bessborough. A passionate political campaigner, an avid letter writer, and a prolific gambler, Henrietta Ponsonby-alongside her sister- was at the heart of the Devonshire House set and would witness many of the upheavals of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including the Battle of Waterloo.

This free talk will last approximately one hour and is part of Heritage Open Days.
