In tandem with its other environmental policies across the parkland and woods, the Foundation has pursued a renewables policy for many years. In 2008, a wood fuel heating system was installed for Stansted House, utilising a Binder240 Biofuel boiler.
This carbon neutral system replaced 11 oil-fired boilers in Stansted House, and, we are advised, reduced the carbon footprint of the House by some 240 tonnes per annum. The system utilises chestnut coppice from Stansted Forest, burning around 300 tonnes per annum.
In 2013 two further Biofuel systems were installed in the Walled Gardens to heat the Garden Centre, Chapel, Glasshouses, Pavilion Tea Room and two houses using 150-200 kw HDG woodfuel boilers.
The use of chestnut coppice in this scale is totally sustainable in the long term.
