About Stansted Park

“Probably the best and most informative country house that I have visited in 50 years” G.C. Sussex

It all began with a hunting lodge in the forest 800 years ago. After several owners and a disastrous fire in 1900, the present mansion was rebuilt on the ‘footprint’ of a 17th century house and the estate became the home of the Earls of Bessborough in 1924. The ancient chapel of St Paul now stands on the site of the first great house. Lord Bessborough's book "The Enchanted Forest" tells the story of Stansted Park since the 12th century.

The house was enjoyed by the families of the 9th and 10th earls throughout their lifetimes and is presented to visitors as a family home, with splendid family portraits and contents. The downstairs servants' quarters are a unique and evocative experience.

Since 1983 the House and Estate have been owned by Stansted Park Foundation, a charitable trust set up by  Frederick, 10th Earl of Bessborough.

The House and Grounds are now open to the public and used for events, weddings, and exclusive corporate functions .

“What a great place- such interesting guides ” Lyn, Suzi, Kev, from Sydney (Oz)
